Risk by extrapolation A further way of heightening risk awareness is by extrapolating data, for example, when the dire health effects of administering huge doses of a substance, (often in experiments on animals), are used as evidence that the substance is dangerous to humans, even though humans are only likely to consume tiny quantities of the substance. The logic that operates is that if a substance can be shown to be harmful, then regardless of dose – ceteris paribus – it must be a harmful substance.
